Chicago is known as the birthplace of house music, a dance music genre that originated in the city's bedrooms and basements in the late 1970s and 1980s. Black and queer DJs, such as Frankie Knuckles, Ron Hardy, and Jesse Saunders, created the genre by blending disco, R&B, punk, rock, and electronica, and by carving out inclusive spaces for people who felt excluded from other venues.
